By Shakeitha Graham on June 20, 2017

Being a college student is very expensive and some of us have to find ways to earn our own money. In college, you are basically on your own and have to be responsible for yourself. Some of us are lucky to have parents that fund our whole college lives, but there are those of us that have to work to earn the money we need.

There is no struggle like being a college student. However, the summertime is the best time to earn money for the rest of the school year. Whether you are taking summer classes or not, here are a few ways to earn extra money for school.

1. Go the traditional route

Traditional jobs were made for college students. They allow you to get the work experience you need for proof of work stability when writing your resume. It may not seem like McDonald’s or Applebee’s will look good on your resume, but the skills needed to complete those jobs are credible.

Being a fry cook at Burger King may not look cool, but it can prepare you for working in the food industry as a chef or restaurant owner. With that being said, it is important to choose a job that is similar to your future career choice. That way you’ll get some experience that will be beneficial to you in the long run.

2. Is my babysitter a college student?

Being a babysitter is like the right of passage for becoming a teenager. However, teens are not the only ones qualified to be a babysitter. If your degree program is in Education or Child Psychology, then babysitting is the perfect summer job for you!

There is nothing like coloring on the floor with five-year-olds or making slime with eight-year-olds. Babysitting, as a summer job, will allow you to earn the money you need while giving you the freedom to tap into your inner kid. What better way to make money than to have fun while doing it? As a babysitter, you will also develop the skills you need to work in the education field. This is also a chance to work on your business skills.

3. Working at the car wash

Nothing says entrepreneurial skills like starting your own car wash business. Starting your own carwash is pretty easy! You won’t have to invest a whole lot of money into it. If you are home for the summer, starting a carwash for your neighborhood will help you earn lots of money. Since you already have the location, all you’ll need is sponges, a water hose, a bucket, a brush, car wash detergent, car wash mitts, towels, and sunlight.

Come up with a reasonable yet profitable price. Make a sign to attract your neighbors and start reeling in the cash. Washing cars will help you to be productive while teaching you business skills that will come in handy if your degree program is Business Management or Entrepreneurship. It is also a great way to earn money while allowing you to have more free time to enjoy your summer.

4. Freelancer

There are so many freelance job opportunities online. You can create a profile on different freelance job websites to find the right job for you. You can start at freelancer.com or you can conduct a Google search to find freelancer websites. If you are a creative writing and English major you can work as a freelance writer for the summer. There are so many companies out there that need content writers and editors to create content for their websites.

You can also be a freelance graphic designer, data entry and processor, web designer, and social media marketer. These jobs will help you to get experience in your career field so it’ll be easier to start your career after graduating. Since these jobs can be done from your laptop, you can also do them year round, just as long as you have some free time and an internet connection.

There are so many other job opportunities out there for college students to do over the summer. These are just a few that any student can do. You also have the option to do volunteer work or internships. You may not get money as payment, but the experience will look good on your resume.

As a student, you have to make the best choice for you. The struggle of being a college student affects all of us, but there are things out there that can help to make your college experience much easier. Take advantage of the summer and go out and find the right job opportunity to help you earn extra cash while getting the experience you need to succeed.
